Catawba Rhododendron can be found in the southern Appalachians as well as Virginia to Kentucky and south to Alabama and Georgia. It produces violet-pink blooms in the spring that attract native bees. Reaching a height of 4-10 feet and a width of 5-12 feet, this rhododendron needs moist to moderately dry, acidic soil and prefers filtered shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. Tolerates more sun in cooler locations.
