New Jersey Tea is a low, upright, deciduous shrub that grows 3 ft. tall with glossy grayish leaves. Small white flowers occur in 2 in., branch-tip clusters and attract the gamut of pollinators from hummingbirds and butterflies to bees.  A larval host to Spring Azure, Summer Azure and Mottled Duskywing butterflies. The name is derived from the practice during the Revolutionary War period of making tea from dried leaves of this nitrogen-fixing shrub. Prefers dry to medium soils.
