Showy purple flowers bloom August to October. Provides nectar for butterflies such as: tiger swallowtail, clouded sulphur, orange sulphur, gray hairstreak, aphrodite fritillary, painted lady, red admiral and wood nymph.  It is also an important plant for native bumble bees. It makes a good cut flower as well. It is drought, dry soil, and shallow-rocky soil tolerant, making this a good addition for a cedar barren or a pollinator garden.
