Also called Wild Sweet William. This is a wonderful, underutilized native Phlox! Provides long summer bloom and mixes well with other perennials. Add mulch in summer to keep the roots cool. Prefers moist soil and does not like drying out. Can flop from the weight of its own flowers if it doesn't have any other plants around for support.

The genus name Phlox is derived from the Greek word phlox meaning flame in reference to the intense flower colors of some varieties. Specific epithet, maculata means spotted.
