GARDEN SITE: ☀️-⛅ Average to rich, well-drained soil. Very tolerant of a wide range of soil types but prefers a rich loam. This shrub appreciates afternoon shade in warmer garden locations and planting zones.

SIZE: 6 ft.-12 ft. Spread: 6 ft.-12 ft.

FLOWERS: Fragrant, large, magnolia-like, copper to deep red. April-May.

WILDLIFE: Nectar for butterflies and other pollinators. A particularly important nectar source for small beetles such as Sap Beetles.

LARVAL HOST TO: Oblique-banded Leafroller moth

ZONE: 4-9

Valued for its very fragrant and unique looking blooms, Calycanthus floridus, is a dense, well-branched, deciduous shrub that blooms prolifically in shades of copper, maroon or deep red. The large, glossy green leaves provide an attractive backdrop for summer blooms and turns a brilliant shade of yellow in the fall. Relatively low maintenance and pest free, this shrub is an ideal choice as a specimen plant or as part of a woodland garden. Tolerant of deer browse, clay soil and occasional flooding.
