The genus name ‘Coreopsis” comes from the Greek words koris meaning "bug" and opsis meaning "like" in reference to the shape of the seed which resembles a bug or tick. The specis name “tripteris” is a mix of the Latin “Tri” for three and “Pterus” for wing or feather refering to the appearance of the foliage that resemble feathers.
